The Tandoor Site

Books and Contacts

Site designed and built by PJT

These are some resources which I found useful in planning my tandoor project.

The company from which I obtained my tandoor is The Clay Oven company and is based in London. They sell tandoors via the web. They don't advertise the liners alone but were happy to supply one on request.

Useful books include:

  • Collins Complete DIY Manual: an excellent book which I used as a reference throughout the construction.
  • The Bread Builders: helped inspire me to get on with building a wood fired oven. Lots of information about wood fired bread ovens - though nothing about tandoors.
  • Building a Wood Fired Oven for Bread and Pizza: Tom Jaine's inspirational book which gave me the idea of building some kind of wood fired oven in my back garden. Like the previous book it contains nothing about tandoors but does include some useful advice about general construction.

Many of the recipes on this site are adapted from those in The Tandoori and Barbecue Cookbook by Ravinder Sachdev (ISBN 81-216-0021-9) which is probably quite hard to find outside India. My copy came from the wonderful Books for Cooks in London

Various types of tandoor are manufactured by Marwah Tools in India, and at www.indiantandoors.com. They say they will ship to any port worldwide.

An alternative to the traditional clay tandoor is the steel tandoor/barbecue sold by www.nipooria.com.

www.gulati-tandoors.com is a US site selling tandoors. It says that they also ship to the UK.

Nishi Enterprise are a New Jersey company supplying tandoors to the restaurant business.
